THE BENCH / CONCEPT WORKSHOP

Locked out now

What we need,
and what we charge.

Before we dispatch

Your address and unit type, whether you own or rent, how the door is locked, and a number we can reach you on. We confirm the call-out fee and the after-hours rate before anyone sets off.

Proof before we open

We will not open a door without proof that you live or work there — an NRIC, a proof of address, or your tenancy agreement. A locksmith who opens a door for anyone who asks is the problem, not the solution.

Non-destructive first

Where a lock can be picked or bypassed without damage, that is what we do, and you are told the price of both before we start. Drilling is the last resort, not the default.

What we will not do

We will not take cash without a receipt, quote a price on arrival only to change it after the door is open, or work on a door we cannot verify you are entitled to open.

What we fit

Three kinds of work.

Before you buy a digital lock

Not every digital
lock belongs on
your door.

HDB main doors and most apartment doors are fire-rated. Since 1 March 2024, a digital lock fitted to a fire door in Singapore has to be certified for fire resistance, so the model matters, not only the price.

The requirement for digital locksets on fire-rated doors comes from SCDF guidance; SCDF does not certify or endorse products, and certification is issued by accredited certification bodies, so a claim of “SCDF-approved” is false. We name the certificate and the body that issued it in the quotation, and the copy comes to you with the invoice.

How a quote works

Photos first,
then a fixed price.

  1. Send photos

The door, the frame, the existing lock and the surrounding wall. A photo of the edge of the door tells us more than a phone call.

  2. We assess

If the work can be quoted from photos, you get a fixed figure in writing. If it cannot, we say so and explain why a visit is needed.

  3. Site visit where it matters

Cameras and access control are surveyed in person. Any visit fee is stated before booking, and is credited against the work if you proceed.

  4. Fixed quote, then work

No deposit before a written quote, and no charge for a variation you have not agreed to in writing.

Our side of it

The four answers
we give in writing.

This trade has a reputation for a price that grows at the door. These are the four things we put in writing before anyone starts, so the conversation at your door stays short.

Before you book

Rates, before
we dispatch.

Nobody enjoys hearing the price after the door is open, so the figure is given before anyone sets off. After-hours work is charged on the same basis as daytime, at the rate stated on the call, not at a premium discovered on the invoice.

Illustrative concept pricing. Confirm the current call-out rates, after-hours charges, the warranty period and any site-visit fee before booking.

Three jobs, and what each one takes

What the work
looks like.

One call-out, one digital lock, one camera job. The scope and the on-site time are stated on each, so the figure given on the phone can be checked against the work described.

CALLOUT / CYLINDER CHANGE / ONE DOOR

Opened, then re-keyed

Call-out / Cylinder replaced / 40 to 60 minutes on site

A door that will not open, and a cylinder that no longer takes the old key. The door comes first, the new cylinder second, and the rate is the one agreed on the phone.

How the visit ran ↗

A rented flat, one key lost and no spare held by the agent. The door was opened without damage in twelve minutes, the cylinder was replaced with one of the same grade, and the new key was cut and tested at the door. The agent was called for consent before the cylinder came out, the original was bagged and left with the tenant, and the whole visit was charged at the daytime call-out rate plus the cylinder.

FIRE-RATED MAIN DOOR / CERTIFIED LOCK / ONE DOOR

Fitted to a fire-rated door

Digital lock / Certificate matched to the door / Two hours on site

On a fire-rated main door the model is a product decision before it is a fitting job: the certificate has to name the lock and meet the door's rating.

What the certificate check found ↗

A 1990s flat with a 30-minute fire-rated main door and a keypad deadbolt wanted. Three models were rejected: two certificates named a different model, and one lock was rated below the door. The fourth was certified at 60 minutes with a mechanical fail-safe, so a flat battery still opens the door from inside. Fitting took two hours, the old cylinder went onto the service-yard gate, and the certificate and warranty went into the handover pack.

CAMERA POINTS / SURVEYED ON SITE / PRICED PER POINT

Cameras, surveyed before priced

Camera and alarm points / Site visit / Per point

Camera work is quoted from a visit rather than a phone call: the points, the cable route and where the recorder can live decide the figure.

What the survey changed ↗

A shophouse frontage: four points over the entrance, the till and the rear door, cable along the existing tray, recorder in the back office. A fifth point over the sign was dropped in the survey because it looked into the neighbouring unit's window, and the entrance lighting was re-aimed instead so faces resolved at night.

Enquiry, quote, fit, hand over.

  1. Enquiry

Photos or a call, and the rate confirmed before anyone travels.

  2. Quote

A fixed figure in writing, with what is and is not included.

  3. Fit

Own team, on the agreed scope, with the door left working the same day.

  4. Hand over

Keys, app access, warranty terms and the certificate where one is required.

Replacing a lock or fitting a digital one

Photograph the edge of the door and the existing lock. Tell us the door type if you know it, and we check the fire rating and the certificate that names the model before we confirm anything.

“They told me the call-out fee on the phone, then told me the lock could be picked rather than drilled. The price did not move.”

The practical questions

Before anyone
travels.

What is the call-out fee, and is it higher at night?

S$60 in the daytime and S$120 after hours, per visit, both stated on the phone before anyone sets off. If you go ahead with the work, the call-out is inside the figure you were quoted rather than added to it, and the figure does not move because the job took longer than expected.

Will you open my door without ID?

No. We ask for NRIC, a proof of address dated within the last three months, or the tenancy agreement, and on a rented flat we call the landlord, the agent or the building concierge. If none of that can be produced, the visit ends at the door: the call-out fee for the attendance is all that is charged, and nothing is forced.

Is drilling always necessary?

Almost never. Standard cylinders and most rim and mortice locks open without damage, ten to twenty minutes once the method is agreed. Where a lock has seized or the door has dropped, we give you the price of drilling and the price of the replacement cylinder before a drill comes out of the bag, and you choose which one you are buying.

Do you subcontract the installation?

No. The fitters are ours and the warranty work goes back to the person who fitted the lock. Subcontracted work is where responsibility gets lost a year later, when a lock fails and nobody recognises the job, which is why ours stays in-house.
